Asthma is the leading cause of serious chronic illness in children, affecting an average of 10% of children nationally. Poorly controlled asthma negatively impacts academic achievement by increased absenteeism, spending more time in the health office/less time in class, poorer quality of sleep, and decreased activity tolerance.
Some Keys to Effective Asthma Management:
* Obtain a medication authorization for your child who has an active diagnosis
* Provide the school with quick-relief medication, i.e. Albuterol
* Obtain a Valved-Holding Chamber Spacer for Albuterol MDI’s
* Obtain an Asthma Action Plan from your provider if your child is being treated.
Remember, the school nurse can be very instrumental in teaching your child why and when to take asthma medications, how to optimize inhalation techniques, how to avoid triggers, and more. If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse.
